November 26: National Hockey League Formed
On 26 November 1917 a glorious event occurred in Montreal, Canada when one of the greatest leagues in sports was established: The National Hockey League. Founded after the demise of the NHA National Hockey Association when labor and financial problems with Canadian teams and their owners arose, the NHL looked to increase the popularity of the game and make it more fan friendly. They had teams play with six men per side, instead of the original seven. Fighting was also encouraged and players not wearing helmets often lead to pretty nasty injuries.
The first years of NHL consisted of two leagues: The Pacific Coast Hockey Association, which featured the Portland Rosebuds, Seattle Metropolitans and Vancouver Millionaires, and the Western Canada Hockey League, which featured the Calgary Tigers, Edmonton Eskimos, Regina Capitals, Moose Jaw Sheiks, Vancouver Maroons and Victoria Cougars. After a competitive regular season, there would be playoffs that rewarded the winning team the heralded Stanley Cup.
Eventually, teams in the United States began to form and as franchises were established in cities across America, the NHL was slowly became the most popular “Major” League around. As the Great Depression and World War Two came around, bankruptcies and players getting drafted into the army caused many teams to collapse. After the war ended, only six teams remained: Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadians, New York Rangers, and Toronto Maple Leafs. These teams became known as the Original Six.
As time went on, the NHL has continued to grow and prosper. The league has expanded to 30 teams and has been at the height of its glory. However, over the last 15 years, lockouts and money and have completely ruined the game. Numerous “lockouts” have caused multiple winters without hockey and caused many fans to give up on the game they love. And fans continue to suffer in 2012. Who knows what the future will hold for hockey in the America, but one would hope players would play for the love of the game like their hockey ancestors, instead of fighting over millions of dollars like spoiled businessmen.
