December 5: Phi Theta Kappa Founded

On 5 December 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia the first collegiate Greek-lettering fraternity is founded.

The Phi Beta Kappa society is an academic honor society in the United States and has nearly 280 chapters with over 500,000 members. The main purpose of the foundation of this club is it aims to promote and advocate the excellence in the liberal arts and sciences departments and inducts only the most outstanding students of arts and sciences from American colleges and universities from around the country.

In 1776 the group consisted of two students who most commonly meet at the local Raleigh tavern just off campus to discuss various topics. Whether the students organized to meet more freely and discuss non-academic topics or to discuss politics in a Revolutionary society is unknown. The earliest records indicate only that the students met to debate and engage in communication outside of college classrooms and on topics that would have been not far removed from the curriculum which they wound have been currently engaged in during their college studies. There were earlier fraternities at the college such as the F.H.C (Fat Hat Club), which was founded in 1750, but consisted of Latin-lettering and thus called a Latin-lettering society.

Like the older Latin-lettering societies, Phi Beta Kappa was a secret society. To protect its members and to instill a sense of solidarity, each member had the essential attributes of most modern fraternities: 1.) An oath of secrecy including a badge or token and 2.) A diploma (or certificate) of membership. Before the British invasion of Virginia forced the temporary closure of the College of William and Mary and disbandment of the Phi Beta Kappa early there earlier in 1781, Elisha Parmelee an alumni of Yale and Harvard passed through Williamsburg and took charters from the Phi Beta Kappa to establish branches of the society at these schools and in 1780 a second chapter was founded, and not long after in 1781 a third chapter followed. By 1833 there were 25 chapters, and by 1920 the total chapters reached 89. By 2007 nearly 280 chapters emerged and that count is continuing to grow.

Phi Theta Kappa is the traditional one for two year colleges while Phi Beta Kappa is the honor society for four year colleges. It follows very closely with its two year partner in the sense that it focuses on the arts and science. Since it was formed though 17 U.S presidents, and 37 supreme court justices have been inducted members. Only about 10% of the nations higher learning institutes have the program though.

Also before the British invasion, the college of William and Mary was shut down thus disbanding the Phi Beta Kappa for a short period. It wasn’t until about the late 1780’s that the chapters started to open up again.

I know that in the U.S there are 123 fraternities and sororities with approximately 9 million members total. It wasn’t until 1851 when the first sorority was formed. It was Alpha Delta Pi. It was formed at Wesleyan Female College. Today there are fraternities and sororities for just about every group of people. There are fraternities for music majors, college athletes, republicans and democrats. There are sororities for academics, political science/criminal justice majors. There are even sororities for Latinas!
Though there are many stereo-types about belonging to these groups. It is common to first pledge as a freshmen. When one pledges to join a fraternity/sorority they have to go through rush. Rush stereo-types include hazing which is illegal to do. Rushing now-a-days usually is a lot of community service work done in a weird way. Like cleaning bathroom with toothbrushes. Yes they actually do that.
All in all it just goes to show how much the Greek system has formed since its start in 1776. I’m happy to say that I myself have many friends that belong to Phi Sigma Phi, a fraternity at Eastern Michigan University. I hope to one day pledge and join a sorority when i attend EMU next fall.

Just to add on to this, sororities and fraternities are social groups that belong to what is called the Greek Life. Speaking of stereotypes about sororities and Fraternities hazing had given some of them bad reputations now there are still people who as individuals who are in either do they get beat for messing up. My cousin pledged Alpha and I asked him was he ever whooped and he explained to me that it is now illegal for fraternities to do so.
I agree with your opinion on how much the Greek System has formed and how it has opened doors for many college students in the long run.

Phi Theta Kappa was founded in 1910 in Columbia, Missouri. Phi Theta Kappa has come a long way from its beginning. Currently, with 1250 chapters worldwide and 900 chapters in the United States, it is an honor society that motivates students by rewarding them for maintaining an excellent GPA. Phi Theta Kappa members have the chance to develop through the four hallmarks: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship. The massive amount of community service done by the members helps them become an involved citizen in the society. These members are the ones that are elected for college services such as tutoring, graduation, and campus tours due to their excellent educational performance. The lessons learned as a member with Phi Theta Kappa will stick with a member long after leaving the honor society.

As a current member of Phi Theta Kappa, this is very interesting to me. We have been an established society for a while now and while Phi Theta Kappa Honor Societies can only be found in community colleges and not in major universities, we have made our mark on this earth and are becoming more well known for what we do for the community. We have fundraisers and attend soup kitchens to help those that are unfortunate, which is something we have done for years now. Phi Theta Kappa is known for recognizing success through students grades and those who elect to become a part of our family are showing that they are all natural born leaders stepping out of the crowd! For those of you that are interested to know more about us and our history please feel free to stop by our office.

Phi Theta Kappa was founded in Oct 1st, 1919. It has over 50 chapters and colonies at universities all over the U.S. They are referred to “colloguially” mostly known as diversity for their brothers and services.

  8. Sara Papp says:

The name “Phi Theta Kappa” is from the first letters of three Greek words meaning “wisdom,” “aspiration” and “purity.” Eleven years later, Phi Theta Kappa was recognized by the American Association of Junior Colleges on November 19, the date now celebrated as the “Society’s Founders Day.”

    • Sara Papp says:

Also , back in accent Greece the Spartans where also a very limited group… by limited I mean only a certain type of person could be a spartan. Where in fraternity’s and sororities they accept who they want after “hazing” making them do challenges. The Spartans made the boys go through many survival tasks to prove that they were strong enough.

Greek Life is something that is growing more and more every year at colleges all over the country. Outside Phi Theta Kappa there are many other fraternities and sororities.
Greek Life is looked to some as a social gathering were frat brothers and sorority sisters get together and part take in drinking games and partying.

At first I must admit that that was my view on this. But what I found out quickly from friends that have joined fraternities and sororities is that there is much more to it. To begin with it looks outstanding on a resume. It definitely helps build a good base of networking. There is ability to meet lots of people not just at your college but at fraternities like yours at college campuses around the country.

Also fraternities and sororities take part in many charitable activities as well as fund raise and giving back to the community.

So although many may think that joining a fraternity or sorority to just party and get drunk there is much more to it than just that.

Also, to add to this, Alpha’s are apart of a black fraternity and in 1903 Alpha Kappa Nu was established. By 1906 the Alpha Phi Alpha was established at Cornell College. Today Alpha Phi Alpha is known as the oldest black collegiate fraternity.
