December 13: Saddam Hussein Captured

On 13 December 2003, the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was captured near the town of Tikrit. It took a total of eight months of strenuous searching for the United States military to find this well-hated leader. Six hundred troops were involved in this hunt, known as Operation Red Dawn.

When found sitting in a hole, Saddam was covered in filth and his stench was unbearable. With no way of fleeing, Saddam surrendered without any fight and his body guards unsuccessfully tried to run away. The hole he was hiding in had a styrofoam door placed over the entrance with a rug on top. Apparently, Saddam’s bodyguards’ plan to keep him safe was to move his hiding location every four hours. They had a total of twenty to thirty different building s to rotate him in, which were usually provided by his relatives.

Operation Red Dawn was inspired by the 1984 movie Red Dawn directed by John Milius. In the movie, a group of teenagers try to fight off Soviets from completely destroying their town. Many well- known actors starred in this movie including: Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, and Harry Dean Stanton. In 2012, a remake of Red Dawn had the teens fighting North Korean soldiers.

The reason U.S. troops titled their mission after this movie is because the teenagers in the movie gave themselves the name “Wolverines” to go along with their guerrilla resistance unit. The U.S. troops’ two hiding places under surveillance by the combat team were code-named “Wolverine 1” and Wolverine 2.”

All in all the United States Army 4th Infantry Division did one heck of a job completing their mission and keeping our country safe and reign supreme.

This is my second year attending Schoolcraft. I’m not exactly sure what I’m majoring in yet, but I’m leaning towards a career in psychology or art history. I spend most my time being a receptionist at Suburban Infiniti of Novi, detailing my car, and hanging out with friends and family. Oh, and did I mention I am a HUGE Detroit Tigers fan?

It’s funny how they named the operation “Red Dawn.” And the fact that Saddam had up to thirty hiding places is insane. Sounds like a lot of time, money, and effort to me.
