June 7: Hockeytown Restored

On 7 June 1998, the Detroit Red Wings won their first Stanley Cup in 42 years. When the talented team that experienced several playoff disappointments was crowned Stanley Cup champion 15 years ago, it was long overdue and was a return to glory for a once-proud Original Six franchise

Until the 1998 season, the Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers had never faced each other in the playoffs prior to the season. Even in the early days of expansion beyond the Original Six, the clubs never made the postseason when the NHL employed its cross-over format between East and West divisions. Nor had they met in the two year experiment to rank NHL playoff teams 1 through 16 in 1979–80 and 1980–81.

It was a moment that had been building for years. The Red Wings had promising teams, but were always upset in the first round of the playoffs; in 1993 against. Toronto and in 1994 against San Jose. They were poised for a breakthrough during the 48-game lockout that shortened 1995 season but were swept in the finals by New Jersey. They appeared invincible the following season, recording an NHL record 62 wins (which still stands to this day), only to be ousted in the Western Conference finals by Colorado.

After some growing pains, the Detroit Red Wings finally discovered the winning formula. With a 38-26-18 overall record, they sat 2nd in their division and 3rd in the Western Conference. Detroit went on to beat the St. Louis Blues four games to two, sweep the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, get revenge on their bitter rivals, the Colorado Avalanche in six games, and went on to sweep the Philadelphia Flyers in four games.

The word “Hockeytown” was shown over the Detroit Red Wings logo at center ice and is still there to this day. Detroit has been restored. Former captain of the Detroit Red Wings and recently retired Nicklas Lidstrom was quoted saying, “That moment, when you’re winning it all and all the players are hugging your goalie, celebrating, is something special.” They’ve done just that, winning it four times since, the most in NHL the past 22 years.
