January 29: Thomas Paine Born

On 29 January 1737, Thomas Paine was born. As a political activist, author, and political theorist, Paine became a highly influential figure of the American Revolution.

In January of 1776, after the American Revolution had already begun, Paine anonymously published the pamphlet titled Common Sense. In this writing, he argues that the colonists should claim their rightful freedom against the British, making the private views already held by many colonists more public. The pamphlet became an immediate success as it spread throughout the American British colonies. The ideas were easily read and understood by the common people and therefore gained their favor, as well as favor of the rest of the colonists.

The success of the pamphlet deemed Paine “Father of the American Revolution” and influenced the American Patriots to declare their independence from Great Britain. While the pamphlet most likely had little to do with Congress’s decision to issue the Declaration of Independence, it did provide the spark that the revolutionists themselves needed to finally claim their freedom.

In late 1776, Paine published another pamphlet series titled The American Crisis. Its purpose was to inspire the Americans in their battles against the British. General George Washington had the first pamphlet of the series read to his soldiers in order to inspire them before charging into battle. Paine even offered financial aid to Washington’s army in order to help in the fight.

Thomas Paine highly encouraged the idea of free thinking and expressed these views throughout his writing. Had it not been for Paine’s inspirational words, perhaps the Patriots may not have had the motivation or courage to fight for their freedom.
