December 20: Secession

south-carolinaOn 20 December 1860, South Carolina was the first of eleven states to successfully secedes from The Union. It was one of the causes of The Civil War which officially started on 12 April 12 1861.

The Civil War was one of the worst and bloodiest wars in American history. The cause of many states wanting to leave The Union was they wanted to limit the role of slavery.

The Union was led by one of the greatest presidents of all time in Abraham Lincoln. The Confederates were led by Jefferson Davis. The war lasted about four years. Some of the major battles in the war were the Battle of Bull Run, The Battle of Shiloh Church, The Battle of Antietam Creek, and The Battle of Gettysburg. The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the bloodiest battles in history. Casualty wise, it was the bloodiest battle in the war.

The ultimate end of the war was the surrender of the south at the Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia.

Both sides had amazing generals arguably two of the greatest in history. The Union had future President General Ulysses S. Grant, and The Confederates were led by Robert E. Lee.

Ironically General Lee was originally offered to lead The Union but he respectfully declined because he wanted to represent his home state of Virginia. The Union actually had to go through a list of seven generals before they finally reached Grant.
