December 22: Not so Hansom any more…
On 22 December 1834 an architect named Joseph Hansom patented what he liked to call his “safety cab” but also known in the world as the Hansom Cab. This was a design to combine speed and safety.
The “Safety Cab” is a horse drawn carriage that is light and can be towed by one horse therefore, it was cheaper and more agile. The Hansom cab became a big hit and everyone was paying to get a ride from these well protected and efficient carriages. The cab could fit as many as three passengers along with the driver who was on a lifted seat in the back of the cab. The cab had a trap door behind so the passengers could pay and give their directions after the driver had hit a lever to release the door.
The Hansom cab has now evolved into what we know as a “Taxicab” which has a taximeter which calculates the passenger’s fare. The taxicab was introduced in Paris in 1899, London in 1903, and New York in 1907. Afghanistan uses old soviet taxi cabs still to this day which seem to be the oldest taxicab to date.
After Hansom had patented the cab, it was not too long until there was another improved version. John Chapman had redesigned the cab in 1836 which had became the most popular cab in London.
It’s interesting how things evolved from walking on your feet to get to places, to horse drawn carriages, to taxicabs, to planes that you can fly you anywhere. People in the mid 1800s thought that the Hansom cab was a great architectural design and nothing could further succeed its ingenuity. Now those horse drawn carriages are just a memory and a design in the past.

This is my first year at Schoolcraft College. I’m not positive on what I’m majoring in just yet. I’ve been enjoying my time here and hope to find what I’m looking for. In the mean time, you can find me in the produce department at Kroger stacking fruit and veggies.
