February 26: Grand Canyon National Park
On 26 February 1919 The Grand Canyon was designated a national park by President Woodrow Wilson.
The Grand Canyon has been a landmark in the United States for 123 years. It took many years for the Grand Canyon to be labeled a national park. Senator Benjamin Harrison was the first to offer a bill to make the Grand Canyon a national park in 1882. Harrison, with no success, reintroduced his bill again in 1883 and 1886. Finally, Theodore Roosevelt made the Grand Canyon National Monument in 1908, just so the landmark would be recognized, but legislation to make an official national park did not happen until 1919.
The Grand Canyon is appreciated for the remarkable mixture of distance and complexity. You can see the layering of colorful rocks dating back to Precambrian times. It was made through the opening of the Colorado River and its tributaries after the Colorado Plateau was elevated and the Colorado River system grew along its present path. It is one of earth’s paramount landmarks and the only one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World to be located in North America.
Grand Canyon National Park is located in the northwestern corner of Arizona. Declaring ownership was constantly questioned until the 20th century. Arizona and Utah both argued for the territory, but Arizona was finally approved the state in 1912 and the issue was finally decided.
Animal life in the Grand Canyon area includes about 355 species of birds, 1,500 flowering plants, 17 species of fish, 47 species of reptiles and amphibians and 89 species of mammals. The number of individuals exceeds 4 million people, who go to see the canyon each year, which makes it the most visited national park in the United States.
