On 25 December 1983, the Walt Disney World Very Merry Christmas Parade was televised for the first time.

The parade was televised on ABC Christmas morning and hosted by Joan Lunden and Mike Douglas. The next year, Regis Philbin, joined Joan Lunden and Bruce Jenner with the hosting duties of the televised event. Hosts throughout the years have been iconic television personalities including Alan Thicke, Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa for several years, Nick Cannon, Ryan Seacrest, Maria Menounos, and Mario Lopez.

For the first time, in 1999, the parade was taped at night. That was also the last time it was taped at night. Since then, the parade has been taped the first Friday and Saturday of December; primarily in the Magic Kingdom, one of four parks at Walt Disney World. Because of new technology, they are able to combine pieces of Walt Disney World Very Merry Christmas parade at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and A Christmas Fantasy Parade at Disney Land in Anaheim, California for the television event Christmas morning.

Walt Disney World’s A Very Merry Christmas Parade has been a televised event every Christmas morning since 1983 with the exception of the year 2000. Disney aired a “Tracking Santa” special on Christmas Eve that year.

In 2002 the parade changed formats and took on the name “Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade.” The parade has held that name since.

Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade highlights Disney’s TV shows, movies, and their characters in cartoon and real life forms with a Christmas twist. Pop stars perform outside of the parade and are brought into the parade on floats to sing the most iconic Christmas carols for the parade goers in the parks and TV viewers at home.

The events of the Christmas parade are held in the parks all weekend including concerts and acting performances that are taped and put into a two hour special for the broadcast Christmas morning.
