June 26: Highest Temperature Recorded
On 26 June 1994, some of the highest temperatures were recorded in the United States.
In Denver, Colorado, the high reached 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius), Albuquerque, New Mexico reached 107 degrees Fahrenheit (41.6 degrees Celsius), El Paso, Texas broke records at 112 degrees Fahrenheit (44.4 degrees Celsius), and Laughlin, Nevada topped at an uncomfortable 122 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius). All of these temperatures being the highest ever recorded in the cities.
In Death Valley, California, temperatures sizzled at 126 degrees Fahrenheit (52.2 degrees Celsius) in 1994. Triple digit temperatures are no phenomena to Death Valley. The uncomfortably hot temperatures are attributed to elevation of the area. The location is roughly 190 feet below sea level, and since air gets warmer as it falls, the plunge in elevation adds to the extreme climate.
The hottest temperature ever recorded in Death Valley is 134 degrees on 10 July 1913. In 2012, it became the world’s highest recorded temperature ever when the World Meteorological Organization discredited the record set in 1922 in El Azizia, Libya. The organization deemed the information invalid due to an inexperienced weather observer with ambiguous recording instruments. The man who recorded the 136.4 “record” in Libya held his observation area over asphalt-like ground, which is unlike the native terrain which is desert soil. The asphalt-like ground which he held the observations was much warmer than other nearby areas that recorded cooler temperatures at the same time, raising the red flags for the World Meteorological Organization to start the investigations in the first place.
Many environmentalists would contribute these outrageous temperatures to global warming. Overall warmer temperatures are making the ice caps melt which make for higher sea levels. Doomsday preppers claim all of these happenings are signs that the end is near. Others say it’s just Mother Nature’s cycle of hot, cold, and everything in between throughout the years. Everyone has their opinions of the world changing and scientists are researching the reasons behind the rising temperatures. In the mean time, I suggest an air conditioner.
