December 26: Babe Ruth Sold to Yankees

babe-ruthOn 26 December 1919, Babe Ruth was sold to the New York Yankees.

Babe Ruth is widely considered a legend in the baseball community. Even decades later people still tell stories of him smoking in the dugout and calling the hot dog vender down from the crowd to purchase hot dogs for the entire team. In 1998, the Sporting News named him #1 on their list of the top 100 baseball players of all time.

Babe Ruth was sold to the New York Yankees in order to finance a Broadway production of then Red Sox owner Harry Frazee. After a good season in 1919 Ruth demanded that he get a raise which would equal roughly $230,000 in today’s dollars. Frazee scoffed and refused and shipped Ruth off to New York along with a handful of other players. The play, No, No, Nanette wouldn’t debut until 1925. If you look back on history Frazee is a character that is laughed at in the sporting world. He sold arguably the greatest player of all time to finance a play that ended up not being overly successful.

Since the deal in 1919, the New York Yankees have been the most successful sports franchise in American sports winning 27 world championships. On the other end of the spectrum the deal destined the Boston Red Sox to decades of being cursed and frustrated. Between 1918 and 2004 the Red Sox felt the wrath of the “Curse of the Bambino”. A period of World Series errors and disasters haunted them until the curse was finally lifted in 2004. Babe Ruth would go on to hit over 700 home runs and win seven World Series titles. Nowadays Red Sox fans only say “what if?”
