January 2: Settlers Attacked
On 2 January 1791, members of the Delaware and Wyandot tribes attacked the settlers of Big Bottom, Ohio. During the attack, 12 settlers were killed and three were captured.
Prior to the American Revolution, King George III issued the Proclamation of 1763, which prevented the colonists from expanding west into the territory won from the French and Indian War. After the war, Americans became eager to settle west, past the Appalachian Mountains. Among the new settlers was the Ohio Company of Associates, which purchased 1,500,000 acres from the United States. Some company members settled on the Muskingum River, and established the community of Big Bottom. After the attack, many settlers in the Ohio region reallocated to more populous regions, in order to have more protection from Native American attacks.
The natives attempted to maintain and defend their lands. While the Wyandot tribe did cede land to the United States in the Treaty of Fort Harmar in 1787, certain land ownership remained in disagreement. The native tribes continued to be hostile towards settlers, in order to drive them off the land.
The massacre sparked further conflicts in the frontiers of Ohio. These would continue until the signing of the Treaty of Greenville in 1795.
