January 4: Great Society

johnsonOn 4 January 1965, Lyndon B. Johnson announced the Great Society program in a speech at Ohio University.

The Great Society included a few ideas which would change the way America would be run for the rest of our lives. The main goals of the Great Society social reforms were the elimination of poverty and racial injustice. Throughout this period, many other major programs were in place to change the way America would spend and conserve their money. Ideas that influenced the American society were addressing education, medical care, and transportation.

When LBJ became president, the poverty line was at 22.2 percent. After implementing the Great Society program, the poverty rate dropped all the way to 12.6 percent. The Great Society also helped the younger people in the United States get a hand up. This program offered student loans to kids who couldn’t afford their schooling. Since 1965 the Federal Government has provided more than 200 million dollars in student loans for these kids. Today nearly 60 percent of full-time undergraduate students receive federal financial aid under Great Society programs.

Lyndon B. Johnson caught the American imagination with his famous quote “We have the opportunity to move not only toward the rich society and the powerful society, but upward towards the Great Society.” In my opinion LBJ’s Great Society was one of the better decisions he made while in office. Lyndon B. Johnson changed not only the United States of America on 4 January 1965 but the world as well.
