January 13: The Death of Æthewulf of Wessex
On 13 January 858, Æthewulf died. Æthewulf had been king of Wessex since 839. His son, Æthelbad, took over his ruling upon his death. Since that day, nothing but corrupt things happened to the country of Wessex. Æthewulf had not taught his defiant son the compromise of Wessex with the Saxtons, therefore national peace was doomed and the fear of the date of January 13 began.
Triskaidekaphobia is the fear of the number thirteen. It is a fear that draws references that date back before the time of Jesus Christ. Christians are mostly associated with this fear due to the use and presence of the number thirteen in the Bible. Biblical references point out that this was the day Adam and Eve bit into the forbidden fruit that caused Original Sin. The story of Adam and Eve represents the beginning of the Christian faith. On this day, it is also thought that Jesus was crucified on the cross to die for the sins of his Christian followers.
Another example includes the Last Supper. There were twelve apostles and Jesus at the table. Of the thirteen men there, Judas was the thirteenth man to arrive at the table, and Judas was the man who betrayed Jesus. A superstition came about due to this biblical story declaring that when 13 dine, one will die within the year.
One of the first recorded fears of the number thirteen dates back to about 1760 BC. This terror of the number thirteen is located in the Mesopotamian Code of Hammurabi. The Mesopotamian Code of Hammurabi is a numbered code of law that the people followed. What is missing from this Code of Hammurabi is the number thirteen. The absence of this number proves that the fear of the number thirteen is an old tradition and superstition.
Triskaidekaphobia is a fear that is still very common and practiced today. Most airlines omit the number thirteen from the rows and a majority of tall buildings skip the thirteenth floor. There is even a fear of Friday falling on the thirteenth. This occurs whenever a month begins on a Sunday. This fear can also be classified as a phobia called paraskavedekatriaphobia.
