April 16: Battle of Seelow Heights

april16On 16 April 1945, the battle of the Seelow Heights began. The battle lasted for three days and was the main line of defense for the city of Berlin. It was also the last line of defense that the Germans had to prevent the Soviets from besieging their city. The battle consisted of one million Soviet Union men with 3,000 tanks and 100,000 Germans with roughly 500 tanks. While the Germans were outnumbered about 10 to 1, they had the advantage of being the defender.

Early in the morning, the Soviets began their bombardment with thousands of artillery pieces and Katyushas, which were trucks with multiple rocket launchers on their beds. However, the assault failed because the Nazi general, Gotthard Heinrici, predicted the incoming attack and withdrew all of his forces before they were obliterated by the bombardment. The Soviets were angered, and so they began a full assault, but at a very heavy cost. Through the 3 days of fighting, they would sustain 30,000 casualties; meanwhile the Germans only had 12,000. But after the war was over the Soviets now had a clear path to Berlin.
