March 23: “Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death!”
On March 23, 1775 Patrick Henry, a well-respected politician and orator, delivered one of the most famous speeches of the American Revolution, “Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death!”
Patrick Henry is considered one of the most influential men of his time and he helped get the American Revolution started. Henry protested the tyranny of the British and was the leader of the opposition that took place during the Stamp Act in 1765. Henry is a symbol of the American Revolution and for the struggle that came with the Revolution.
Henry’s words “Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death” are some of the most famous words of the period. His speech was given at the 2nd Virginia Convention at Saint John’s Church in Richmond, Virginia. On that day he stood before the convention and addressed the President and gave his most famous speech. His speech, however, was not just a speech, but a proposal. Henry was proposing that in Virginia there should be a cavalry on a volunteer basis to help protect the people of Virginia. His speech went on to say that Great Britain had this coming because Great Britain had been leeching on to the colonists and were suffocating them. Henry believed every word that he said and that the Colonists had the right to rebel against their motherland. “Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death” shows both the reasons and the passion that started and stuck through the American Revolution War.
Patrick Henry’s most famous words may be well remembered in America, but it is also famous in foreign countries. The Armenian Revolutionary Federation uses their own translation of “Liberty or Death” as their unwritten motto. Also in Uruguay their national anthem, Orientales, la Patria o la Tumba, contains the words “Libertad o con Gloria morir” which translates to Liberty or with glory we die.
Patrick Henry’s most famous words, “Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death” will always be remembered and quoted throughout American history.
