Trouble between American Indians and the European colonists was nothing new. Europeans, intent on settling America, immediately asserted their rights to the land, pushing the Native Indians farther to the west. The British settlers were determined to take what land they could, denying the Native Indians their own right to the land. The Native Indians pushed back, but they were no match for the Europeans weaponry. There were many wars fought between the Native Indians and the European settlers, but the Yemassee war came the closest to wiping out the British colonists during the colonial period.

This is hardly the first time that two different countries tried to occupy the same land. Today there is conflict in the Middle East between Palestine and Israel, each asserting their right to the land and their own country. Jews returning to their homeland at the end of World War II fought to create a place they could call home. The Arabs felt threatened by the wave of Jewish refugees and tried to keep them out. The pull out of the British from the region set in motion a power struggle that is still being fought today.

The battle between Native Americans and Americans is not really over. There may no longer be any wars, but the Native Americans are still fighting for their way of life. They still consider the rest of Americans as invaders to their country.
