Despite common belief, the intent of the Quartering Act was not to kick colonists out of their homes to make room for the “Redcoats.” In fact the intent of the law was to allow British soldiers housing in colonial barracks. However, if the barracks were too small to accommodate all the soldiers, they then would be permitted to seek housing in public areas, which included: local inns, stables, and ale houses. If all of these public locations were filled, the colonists were obligated to house the rest of the British soldiers. Mostly, the soldiers would stay in abandoned houses or colonist’s barns, rarely staying in the colonist’s actually homes. Nevertheless, the colonists resented the idea of providing accommodations to the British, and many refused to abide by the Quartering Act.

In New York, the colonist refused to provide living arrangements for the British soldiers at all. This forced the Redcoats to pitch tents on Boston Common. It was the tensions between the irritated Redcoats and angered Patriots that caused multiply street fights and eventually the Boston Massacre of 1770.
