On 1 February 1775 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a provincial congress was held. John Hancock chaired the committee and began defensive preparations for war against England.

John Hancock was born on 23 January 1737. A native of Braintree, Massachusetts, Hancock later went on to graduate from Harvard College at the age of 17. Following the death of his uncle Thomas, John inherited his successful shipping business making him a wealthy merchant in the Boston area.

During this time, American colonists were starting to feel the tension from British Control. The Boston Massacre and the following riot led by Hancock were both factors increasing the tribulations between the two sides. Hancock directed the committee and moved for removal of British Troops in America.

Teaming up with Samuel Adams and His Sons of Liberty radical group, Hancock really heightened his presence of the British. He demonstrated many public acts of protest towards British Government.

In May 1775, Hancock was appointed Congressional President and showed much financial support for the war effort.

After the revolution, Hancock was appointed Governor of Massachusetts and held that position until his death in 1793. John Hancock was a great patriot and key component to the American effort for Independence. Without leaders like him history could have been written completely different. Hancock and the other Founding Fathers fought for independence, freedom and the right to govern themselves – an effort that sadly is still being fought in some countries today, such as Syria.
