February 3: General Nathanael Greene on the Run
On 3 February 1781, the American Revolutionary War was coming to an end. After some defeating engagements, the British General Nathanael Greene and his troops were on the run from General Charles Cornwallis and his troops fighting in the south. The losses were at Catawba River and at Tarrant’s Tavern. Because of heavy rainfall on February 1, General Greene feared that the river would become impassable.
A Polish engineer and military adviser Thaddeus Kosciusko would make the crossing possible over the Catawba and Pedee Rivers. Assessing General Greene’s options in December of 1780, Kosciusko built a fleet of flat-bottomed boats as a means of transporting General Greene’s troops across the rivers without wasting time on manual portage.
After Kosciusko’s study of the river, it allowed Greene to predict a two-day interval that help save time and allowed the Southern army to continue evading the British troops under the command of General Cornwallis. So General Greene ordered that Kosciusko designed boats be waiting for him and his men when they arrived at the Yadkin river.
Despite the in flood of refugees clogging North Carolina’s roads in a desperate rush to before the notorious Lt. Col Banastre Tarleton arrived, on the evening of February 3, General Greene and his Southern Army crossed the Yadkin River. Although Cornwallis caught up with Greene and his troops and began bombarding Greene’s camp on the far side of the river on February 4, Cornwallis could not cause major damage to Greene’s Southern Army.
General Greene’s timing was too close to call because Cornwallis could not cross the Yadkin River fast enough to chase Greene by the time Cornwallis crossed the river on the morning of February 7. General Greene’s Southern Army had a two day head start on the British heading to the Dan River and to the safety of Patriot-held Virginia.
