April 12: William Kent Dies
On 12 April 1748, Englishmen William Kent died at the age of 62 after a short career as a well-respected architect. Kent started his career as an architect in the 1730’s and is known for reviving the Palladian style in England with his domed pavilions in Badminton House.
Kent is however most associated with English landscape gardening, which revolutionized the layout of estates and gardens. Lancelot “Capability” Brown worked with Kent for seven years at Stowe House, and two years after Kent’s death was accepting his own commissions. Brown quickly became “England’s Best Gardener” and continued promoting Kent’s vision of landscape gardening while also improving upon it.
Brown’s garden layouts were at the height of fashion, mostly because of his use of water features rather than constructions of ornate buildings which were favored in the more traditional English gardens. Brown is considered by some to be Kent’s protégé, and in a way he is, but he had his own style and ideas. Although Kent is still a respected landscape artist he lacked horticultural knowledge and some technical skill when trying to create a garden while Brown saw a lands ‘capability’ to be beautiful, hence his nickname.
Both men had creative minds, but with Kent’s connections and Brown’s knowledge they were both able to revolutionize England’s horticultural history.
