On 3 December 1775, the Father of the U.S. Navy, John Paul Jones, raised the first official flag of The United States of America. The event took place aboard the USS Alfred, the first naval flagship ever purchased by the United States. The ship was in the Delaware River at the time.

Known as the Grand Union Flag, the flag shown is the flag that was used at the event. Ironically, the USS Alfred was formerly known as the “Black Prince” in honor of Prince Edward, the eldest son of King Edward III. Betsy Ross’ starred design would replace the Union Jack the following year.
