December 12: “S” = “…”
On 12 December 1901 ,the first transatlantic radio transmission was received in Newfoundland, Canada from Cornwall, England. The man who received the message was the inventor Guglielmo Marcon.
Guglielmo Marcon was born in Italy in 1874 and was interested in physics from the beginning of his life. Marcon was an innovator with a focus on radio technologies and improving them. The message that was sent on December 12 was the letter “S” which is transmitted as “…” in Morse code. The transmitter was one of the most powerful of its time. However, it was believed that anything longer than a dot would break the transmitter.
Radio has been a major part of many people’s lives since its invention around 1887. The exact date of invention is still debated today because of the lack of records and disputes between different people who claim they made the discovery. Forms of radio include cell phones, Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi), televisions, GPS systems and many other things.
Radio connects people and allows information to be easily shared between people of larger distances than was possible before. Radio has been one of the most life altering things of the modern world and continues to be used in new and more elaborate ways as technologies increase. Without radio this website and all others never would have existed.
