On 10 March 1959, the Tibetan rebellion in Lhasa which was under the control of the communist party of China. During this time China and representatives of the Dalai Lama put the seventeen point agreement into effect, which affirmed Chinese sovereignty over Tibet. Chinese sources regard this document as mutually welcomed by both governments, while the Tibetan government called it invalid due to having it signed under duress.

The rebellion was led by Khampa, who disliked the Dalai Lama’s government well before the communist takeover, as well as the communists. The Khampa wanted to put power in the hands of the people. The people’s liberation army which occupied Kham added to the chaos of Tibet, multiple groups were all rebelling, and fighting trying to rule Tibet. Unfortunately for the rebels the Chinese government was triumphant after the rebellion.

China is still controlling Tibet to this day. China’s stronghold on Tibet and its brutal suppression of any separatist activity has continued in the years following the unsuccessful Tibet rebellion. Thousands of Tibetans have followed the Dali Lama to India and others have left to find other places of refuge. The Chinese Government, over the past year, continues to press policies that have stoked frustration among Tibetans, saying such policies are essential for stability.

Elliot Sperling, Associate Professor, Indian University believes that China has promoted a stable Tibet, however this is due to a lock down of Tibet. The recent crisis over the Olympic torch and Tibet represent an epic clash: not just between Tibetans and Beijing, but between Western culture, America and Europe, and China. The Chinese are angry because they believe that the West wants to deny China the triumph it deserves for its enormous successes.
