On 7 March 1876, the Scottish inventor Alexander Graham Bell received a patent for the telephone. Bell was not the only person to have the invention of the telephone to come into his mind. Elisha Gray was working on the same invention. The two of them actually took the idea to the patent office within hours of each other, but Bell got it there first so his patent was granted.

Before Bell invented the telephone the telegraph was used as the method of communication. The telephone was a major breakthrough because it allowed people to actually speak to the person they were calling, where as the telegraph would just allow you to type a message to someone else.

It would seem that the telephone was a greater invention than the telegraph. However, the telegraph was another great idea that is still used today. The text message allows a person to type a message on their cell phones and send them to anyone else who also has a cell phone.

The cell phone is a piece of technology that has been in the making since Bell first invented the telephone. With the ability to call someone from it and also type messages from it makes the cell phone a combination of the telegraph and the telephone. The technology we have today allows us to have both of these great inventions in a package that fits right into our pockets.
