January 16: “Ivan the Terrible” Made Czar
On 16 January 1547, Ivan IV Vasilyevich (aka “Ivan the Terrible”) was made czar to all of Russia. Since 1533, at the age of three, he had served as Grand Prince of Moscow.
Very shortly after taking his reign, the Great Fire in 1547 created havoc, killing 2,700 to 3,700 people and displacing almost 80,00 people destroying large sections of Moscow that were primarily made of wood. Ivan continued to peacefully modernize Europe, revising the law code: Sudebnik of 1550, a collection of legal procedures. He established a standing army of peace and most note-worthy the Zemsky Sobor which was the first Russian parliament of the assembly of land. In 1553, Ivan ordered a printing press and printed several religious books into Russian during the next ten years.
In the 1560’s, Ivan’s reign took a drastic turn. On top of dealing with drought and famine, Poland and Lithuanian raids became an ongoing activity and, to make matters worse, Ivan’s first wife Anastasia Romanovna died from a suspected poisoning. However, the most devastating event was a betrayal by a member of his nobility, Prince Andrei Kurbsky, who took control of a Lithuanian troop and later took control of the Russian region of Velikiye.
Ivan’s personality and mental health suffered greatly after these actions. He establishing the Oprichnina that killed up to 1,500 nobles. Plagues and more wars continued under his ruling and the infamous “the terrible” was more apparent than ever when he killed one of his sons at 16 with a large pipe.
Ivan died humbly playing chess on March 28th, 1584.
