December 14: George Washington Passes Away
On 14 December 1799, General George Washington passed away in his Mount Vernon, Virginia estate at the age of 67. The great revolutionary leader as well as America’s first president was born 1732 to a farming family in Virginia.
Washington’s first direct military experience came at the young age of 22 as a lieutenant colonel in the Virginia colonial militia. In 1754, Washington led a small expedition against the French in the Ohio River valley on behalf of the governor of Virginia. On 1756, only 2 years of prior battle experience, Washington took command of the defenses of the western Virginian frontier during the French and Indian War. Following the events of the French and Indian War, Washington took a seat in the Virginia House of Burgesses.
Washington greatly opposed of the British taxation as well as the tyrannical tactics the British exorcized against the colonies. In 1774, Washington served to represent Virginia in the continental congress. George Washington was nominated commander in chief of the new Continental army.
Greatly inexperienced civilian solders put General Washington and the country at a disadvantage, but Washington led an effective plan of attack toward the British forces. America’s great diplomatic leadership played a big role in getting the French involved with helping the cause against the British forces.
In October of 1781 the British forces surrendered after a defeat at Yorktown. General Washington had defeated the most powerful country with a wonderful plan of action.
In February of 1789 General Washington had been unanimously elected the first president of the United States of America. After respectfully declining to serve a 3rd term as president, General Washington retired to Mt. Vernon.
