January 4: Burma Gains Indepdependence
On 4 January 1948, Burma gained its independence from Great Britain.
Burma, now known as Myanmar, was originally colonized by Great Britain in 1885 as an extension of their larger colonization of India. Given Burma’s close location to India, Brittan quickly used their influence in the Indian subcontinent to gain a foothold in Burma. Yet Burma did not officially become a colony of Great Britain until 1937.
Japan invaded Burma in 1942 quickly ousting the British. The Japanese held firm control over Burma until 1945 when an allied series of assaults would later liberate Burma from Japanese rule and putting Burma back in the control of Great Britain.
The Burmese gained progress in international talks during 1947 for negotiating their independence, yet the British would assassinate the Burmese head of state in an effort t to maintain their control over Burma. This led to three Anglo Burmese wars which would result in the full independence of Burma from great Brittan in 1948. After Burma became a free republican state, unlike other former colonies, it would not join the British Commonwealth.
Burma’s struggle for independence can be considered in terms of ancient Britain’s own conquest by the Romans. After a long and bloody process, Romans gained control over the ancient lands of Britannia of which they established as part of the empire. Yet, like in Burmese, while the Roman control originally was firm and exacted its rule with an iron hand, the Romans would slowly lose their grip. The populace of ancient Britain really didn’t know why the Romans where there, and after a long time of slowing diminishing influence in the region, the Romans left Britannia. Britain, once a great prize for the Romans, found itself of little interest to their former rulers.
