On 30 January 1595, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet debuted in London Curtain Theater.

The Curtain Theater was used by Shakespeare for more of his plays. Henry V had its debut there as well. Shakespeare used this theater until the famous Globe Theater opened in 1599. The fact that Shakespeare is extremely relevant today is very impressive. His works have been adapted into modern versions and many movies and books reference back to his works.

Shakespeare is one of the most monumental influences that theater can look back on and learn from. He is truly an inspiration due to his fantastic works of art that he created during his life. Shakespeare excelled in created glorious plays of all genres: comedy, history and tragedy.

Shakespeare wrote thirty seven plays. Many of these plays have been referenced to in modern day movies and books and were so integrated into our society that they are hard to pick out. For example, to describe envy as a “green eyed monster” originated in Othello.

Romeo and Juliet has many meanings and morals, one of which is to be willing to die for what you believe in. It is difficult and weird to think about what modern day literature would be like if Shakespeare had not come along. What do you think it would be like?
