On 27 February 1922, the Supreme Court members declared the 19th Amendment to the Constitution constitutional. The amendment was seven decades in the making and took a lot of work to accomplish.

The deciding court case was Leser v. Garnett, which rejected the argument that the Constitution of Maryland limited righting votes to only men and that the new amendment would infringe upon the state’s rights.

Women and men alike had been fighting for these rights since 1848 when the suffrage movement began. Some key players in the Women’s Suffrage Movement were Susan B. Anthony, Alva Erskine Smith Vanderbilt Belmont, and Alice Stone Blackwell.

While the right to vote was a very big step in gaining a lot more equal rights for women, it remains a fact that there are still many prejudices and setbacks for women today.
