December 20: Settlers Leave England for Virginia

2013-12-20On 20 December 1606, the Discovery, the Godspeed, and the Susan Constant left England carrying settlers to Cape Henry, Virginia. The settlers arrived on 26 April 1607. The ships were owned by the Virginia Company.

This expedition had been chartered by King James I of England and the main purpose was establishing an English colony. The majority of historians believe that it was the first time that the Europeans had landed at Chesapeake Bay. Christopher Newport was the chief explorer and captained the largest ship known as the Susan Constant.

The original settlers chose to immigrate to the Jamestown Island because it was a prime location to defend against Spanish attack and because settling on a Peninsula seemed idea for their living conditions. Unfortunately, the Peninsula had harsh conditions that were suited for settlers who were unskilled men who did not want to do manual labor.

The settlers had dreamed of piles of unclaimed gold to fill their ships for a voyage back to Europe, but instead ended up facing the harsh realities of a near uninhabited irrelevant peninsula. The true story of the original settlement is a lesson of both success and failures and in every success story lays a deep rooted line of failures.
