March 16: West Point Established
The 16 March 1802 was an historical day in United States military history. Although this was the first official day that the academy was established by President Thomas Jefferson, it was not the first day that the base and training exercises were started.
West Point, New York was first taken over by the United States Army in the early months of 1778. From here a base was created and started to form to what is now know as, not only one of the best military academy’s in the nation, but also the world.
The founding of this academy is very important to our history as Americans. The list of notable alumni form this institution is extremely impressive. From two different United States Presidents, along with the many different Congressmen, White House officials, and other branches of the national government, to 18 different astronauts in the NASA program (five of whom walked on the moon), to a numerous U.S. Generals (my favorite being General George S. Patton) and just under 65,000 graduates of the academy that all became officers in the US military, that sacrificed so much for our freedom so that we can live the comfortable lives in which we live in today. There are also the many cadets that became CEOs of major corporations.

Without Thomas Jefferson signing off to allow this great establishment, the course of history could have been changed dramatically. I’ll let your imagination figure out how different our world could have truly been without this historical moment in time. This day, from what I can see, truly made our country a far better place than would it have been without West Point Military Academy.
