June 7: Gandhi’s First Act of Civil Disobedience

2014-06-07On 7 June 1893, Mohandas Gandhi demonstrated his first act of civil disobedience.

While working for an Indian law firm in South Africa, Gandhi had to travel to Transvaal Province for a case. This included a long train journey for which he purchased a first class ticket. As he tried to board the train, officials told him that he would have to sit in third class because he was of Indian descent. He refused to trade in his ticket and was removed from the train by force at the Pietermaritzburg Station. This was the first of many acts of civil disobedience performed by Gandhi.

Although he was a pioneer of this strategy, civil disobedience was not Gandhi’s idea. After reading an essay by Henry David Thoreau, he agreed that purposely defying laws that were unjust, in a non-violent way, was the best form of protest. Gandhi continued to “fight” for the rights of his countrymen for the rest of his life.

Gandhi had been raised as a Hindu and was known for his peacefulness and acceptance. This first act of civil disobedience eventually led to the Indian people granting Gandhi the prestigious title of Mahatma, which is translated as ”the great soul.” His style of defiance would create a standard for many civil rights movements of the future.
