2014-05-13On 13 May 1568, the Battle of Langside was fought in Scotland. The battle was provoked by Mary, Queen of Scotland at the time, when she was was captured at Cranberry Hill and imprisoned in Loch Leven castle. She escaped in early May and headed west where her supporters were and to the safety of Dumbarton Castle to restore her rights as queen. Within a few days, Mary had managed to gather 6,000 men to prepare for the forces to come for a battle she intended to avoid.

During the battle, many of her men were cut down by musket fire while trying to advance. Eventually, her army fled as the forces of the Lords of the Congregation unleashed there cavalry under the command of Earl of Moray. The battle only lasted about 45 minutes with very few deaths.

Mary then fled and tried seeking help from her cousin, Elizabeth I in England. Her cousin would not help her and she was held in captivity for the next 18 years in England until her execution for treason on 8 February 1587.
