September 3: Treaty of Paris Signed
On 3 September 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed. This treaty officially ended the Revolutionary War.
The Revolutionary War lasted from 1775 to 1783 and it was actually a world conflict involving not only the United States and Great Britain but also France, Spain, and the Netherlands.
The Revolutionary War was caused by Great Britain’s government. They tried to enforce unfair tax laws on the colonists and this caused the colonists to get angry enough to finally do something about it. The main reason they were coming up with these unfair tax laws was because of the huge debt that they had because of the French and Indian War.
Britain tried saying that they had a right to tax the colonists because they protected the colonists from the French. Most Americans disagreed. They believed that England had fought the expensive war mostly to strengthen its empire and increase its wealth; not to benefit its American subjects.
The main objective of the Revolutionary War for the Americans was to defeat the British and gain their independence. And that’s what they got when the Treaty of Paris was signed.
