The 16 March 1802 was the first official day that the academy was established by President Thomas Jefferson. However, it was not the first day that the base and training exercises started.

West Point, New York was first taken over by the United States Army in the yearly months of 1778. From here, a base was created and started to form to what is now know as–not only one of the best military academy’s in the nation–but also the world.

The founding of this academy is very important to our history as Americans. The list of notable alumni from West Point is extremely impressive. West Point graduates includ United States Presidents, members of Congress, White House officials, and other officials in other branches of the national government. Eighteen astronauts in the NASA program were West Point graduates; five of which walked on the moon.

My favorite U.S. General to graduate from West Point was General George S. Patton. He was just one of the almost 65,000 graduates of the academy that all became officers in the US military; individuals who sacrificed so much for our freedom so that we can live the comfortable lives in which we live in today.
