On 5 August 1861, Abraham Lincoln and the United States government implemented the first US Federal income tax. This act was put in place to help fund the Civil War.

It was a flat rate tax of 3% of a yearly salary of $800 or above or 5% for anyone living outside the US. Adjusted to inflation it was about $19,000 per year.

This is such an important event in history because it is where income tax began in the United States. This is one of the most controversial and most debated political topics there is in The United States, and it is what determines elections almost more than anything else. Since the original act in 1861, there has been 60 updated Tax Act’s put in place by The United States government, the latest coming in 2012.

Though the Act was put in place the majority of citizens were exempt from the tax because only about 3% of the population made over $800 per year, and the tax was not due until June of 1862, The Act of 1861 did not bring much profit to the government. The Act was had more of a snowball effect than anything, though not much was made from the Act of 1861, many more tax laws were to follow gaining the US government countless of millions of dollars helping create the nation we are today. The 2^nd income tax act was put into effect less than a year after the 1^st was signed by President Lincoln.

This will forever be an important date in history because it is where income taxes all started. Even though we all hate paying our taxes, that they’re too high, and we shouldn’t have to give 30% of what we make away without taxes or nation would have failed long ago. So when you think of taxes think of August ; not April 15.
