On 23 June 1757, the Battle of Plassey was fought. It was a short battle that took place between the British East India Company and the Nawab of Bengal, Suraj-ud-daulah, who was aided by the French.

The battle was fought by the British East India Company’s army of 3,000 soldiers against more than 40,000 soldiers under the command of Suraj-ud-daulah in Plassey. Before the battle, the majority of Andrew Clive’s men did not want to go to battle against Suraj-ud-daulah. Within the first half hour of the battle, a torrential downpour started. Clive’s army covered their equipment with tarps, but Suraj-ud-daulah’s army failed to do the same, which caused their cannons and muskets to fail.

After two cannons were fired by Clive’s army, Suraj-ud-daulah had fled the battle. This caused the retreat of Suraj-ud-daulah’s men aided by the French. The British East India Company only lost 22 men in the battle, while the Suraj-ud-daulah lost more than 500 men. Suraj-ud-daulah was then later killed by his own men.

With Suraj-ud-daulah gone, the British East India Company took over Bengal where other European Companies traded. They put Mir Jafar into power and were given treasures from the palace. This allowed them to control the wealthiest province in India, and paved the way for British rule in India for over a hundred years.
