On 9 June 1863,the Battle of Brandy Station took place in Culpeper County, Virginia along the banks of the Rappahannock River. This battle was the largest Calvary battle ever fought on North American soil.

The Confederate armies wanted to move to Shenandoah Valley and up into Pennsylvania. Major General J.E.B. Stuart and his 9,500-man Calvary division were in charge of making sure the move was successful. Before they could do so, Confederate General Robert E. Lee ordered General Stuart to raid the Union army for supplies.

General Joseph Hooker, commander of Union Army of Potomac, knew of General Stuart’s plan and ordered General Alfred Pleasanton to destroy General Stuart and his Calvary. General Pleasanton divided his troops into two fleets, one lead by Brigadier General John Buford and the rest led by Brigadier General David M. Gregg.

General Buford and his troops crossed the Rappahannock River at Beverly’s Ford while General Gregg crossed the river at Kelly’s Ford. General Buford and his troops were in battle with General Stuart. General Gregg came from behind, having to go up and around Fleetwood Hill to reach General Stuart and his troops. As General Stuart was holding his ground, more confederate troops were on their way to help General Stuart defend his position.
