May 22: Abraham Lincoln’s Patent
On 22 May 1849, Abraham Lincoln received a patent on an invention to lift boats over shoals. Lincoln had a love for inventing. From what is known, he is the only President to have ever received a patent.
A patent is an award to someone who has invented a device and has also proven that it works. The patents are their way of showing that they own this idea. Patents are government issued, so it’s not as easy to get one then you think.
Lincoln got the idea when a ship got stranded in a sandbox. The captain said to his workers to grab all the wood that is not being used. That meant all the empty barrels and boxes. What their plan was to do with this wood was simple. They had to force the wood under the boat to get the boat out of the sandbox. After that success Lincoln got the idea for his invention.
In short, how the invention works is similar to what the captain did to get out of their situation. There are large bellows attached to the boat that expands due to the air chambers within them. When an obstacle comes up, they use his invention to help lift the boat over the object. This is a step forward in the evolution of boats.
