On 14 June 1775, the Continental Army was created and consisted of soldiers from the thirteen colonies of America. The Continental Congress established this army in an effort to organize a military revolt against the ruler of the colonies, Great Britain. Today, the Continental Army is viewed as the first official army of the United States of America.

The American Revolutionary War began in April 1775, at the Battles of Lexington and Concord. At this point, the colonies did not have an established army. Instead, each individual colony had a militia that was made up of citizens who worked part-time as soldiers. These men would be thrown into action if local defense was needed. In the years leading up to the Revolutionary War, tensions with Great Britain increased and colonists starting reforming their militia to prepare for the possible conflict. At the onset of the war, Congress created the Continental Army.

American authorities had a difficult time convincing men to sign up with the regular army, as most men preferred to stay in militias close to home. Those that did join the army did so for different reasons. Some joined out of beliefs in a higher purpose, while others did to simply find adventure away from home. Standard enlistment periods lasted from one to three years. The Continental Army of 1775, comprising the initial New England Army, was organized by Washington into three divisions, six brigades, and 38 regiments.

Most of the officers in the Continental army entered the war with minimal experience and had to learn in action. George Washington, the appointed Commander-in-Chief, devoted a great deal of time to working with his officers. Although the army was severely inexperienced, it fought bravely and overcame extreme obstacles that eventually led to victory in the Revolutionary War.

As a result of the Americans’ victory in the Revolutionary War, the United States of America was declared independent from Great Britain. Today, the U.S. remains a successful, independent country, with relations with countless nations in the world.
