On 25 June 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea.
After World War II, Korea was divided up into two lands; the Communist North and the democratic South. In 1948, South Korea elected Democratic Syngman Rhee. The North then retaliated and elected Kim II Sung. Sung was linked to both China and the Soviet Union who were both communist.
Both governments, however, wanted to reunite. This could not happen though because the Communist leaders of the North refused to let UN commission into the land.
Due to America’s policy of containment Communist, Korea was a small part of the Cold War, too. The policy of containment meant that the United States could pretty much join in on foreign soil to “Stop the spread of communism.”
Almost immediately after the North invaded the South, U.S. President Harry Truman sent Naval and Air Units to South Korea. When they asked for permission from the United Nations, they voted unanimously “yes” for the involvement of the U.S.
A ceasefire took place in 1951, but neither side could actually agree on terms. The Korean War ended up lasting three years and was finally resolved by the Korean Armistice Agreement passed in 1953 that had been two years in the marking. Korea is still divided to this day.
