On 4 April 1968, prominent civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was fatally shot in the neck while standing on a balcony at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis Tennessee. Dr. King had come to Memphis to offer support for a local sanitation strike. His march on 28 March 1968 for this same strike ended with violence and Dr. King had scheduled another peaceful march for 8 April 1968.

Dr. King’s philosophy of non-violent protest had already proven successful during the Montgomery Bus boycott as well as in creating support for the Voters Registration act of 1965. Through his leadership, the Civil Rights movement in the middle of the 20^th century had begun to make progress. However, despite Dr. King’s personal philosophy of non violence, his assassination led to riots in several major cities.

The riots following Dr. King’s assassination were part of a growing list of racially motivated rioting in the United States dating back to before the Civil War. One of these riots occurred in the very city where Dr. King spent his last moments. In 1866 major rioting occurred over a three day period in Memphis Tennessee between the white and black populations. The Memphis riots eventually led to the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. The Fourteenth Amendment supports the Civil Rights Act of 1866.

The events that took place in Memphis in 1866 helped lay the foundation for the Civil Rights movement that helped Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to become a household name. The riots after Dr. Kings death show us that there is still more work to do but we are still working toward his dream.
