March 31: A Movement Against Global Warming

2015-03-31bOn the 31 March 2007, the first Earth Hour took place in Sydney where 2.2 million people and 21,000 businesses turned off their lights for one hour. According to the Earth Hour website, Sydney’s energy use decreased 10.2% during that single hour. Shortly after, San Francisco followed and held its own lights out program in October of the same year. March 2008 became the kick off for the first international Earth Hour where 400 cities participated in 35 countries.

Since then, Earth Hour has grown to 162 countries and 7,000 cities around the world where millions of people take part in such an event. In 2014 various world landmarks contributed to the event. These included the Harbour Bridge, Table Mountain, The Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, Times Square and the International Space Station.

Earth Hour is a worldwide grass movement that inspires people to take part in protecting our planet and increase awareness on the growing problem of global warming. This occasion was introduced by the World Wildlife Fund. With the continuous growth of the movement, people will begin to see its importance and how much energy a one hour time period of no lights conserves. By cutting back, people can contribute to make a huge difference in the battle against global warming.

I am Lebanese American and this is my second year attending college. I love to play soccer, spend time with my family and friends, read, spend time outdoors, travel, help others out and shop.
