On 18 March 1910, the first film adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein was released. Directed by J. Searle Dawley, the black and white film was only 16 minutes long and the cast was uncredited, yet it marked the beginning of a long and successful film franchise.

Thirty years and four additions to the movie franchise later, Universal Studios released a remake of the original film with the same name in 1931. While audiences were still buzzing from the success of Universal’s previous film, Dracula (1931), this remake, starring legendary horror actor Boris Karloff, brought in twice as much money as the vampire film and is the most widely-known film in the Frankenstein series to this day.

Due to the outstanding success of the remake, Universal produced two sequels: The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and The Son of Frankenstein (1939), casting Karloff as the creature in both films. Though it’s uncommon for a sequel of a film to outrank its predecessor, the first sequel was even more of a success than the original remake. While the second continuation wasn’t nearly as successful, The Bride of Frankenstein is regarded amongst horror movie buffs as one of the greatest horror films of all time.

Though none of the newer movies have reached the star-status of their predecessors, this hasn’t deterred film-makers from expressing the inspiration Shelley’s story has struck in them by producing Franken-films of their own. To this day, there are lists and lists of movies inspired and featuring different versions of Frankenstein’s monster, and the lists keep growing.

One of the most recent additions to the franchise is I, Frankenstein (2014), and there’s a new film in the works called Victor Frankenstein, starring Daniel Radcliffe and scheduled for release in 2015.
