October 12: Call Me Madam
On 12 October 1950, Call Me Madam, the award winning musical, opened in New York City at the Imperial Theatre.
Call Me Madam stared Ethel Merman as Mrs. Sally Adams and Paul Lukas as Cosmo Constantine. The show was one of the most popular and went on for 644 performances at the Imperial. After starring in the production Lukas went on to star in films, one being Watch on the Rhine, for which he won an Oscar for Best Actor.
Merman won a Tony Award for her performance in the stage production of Call Me Madam. She also won a Golden Globe for her performance in the film production. Merman died in February of 1984 due to brain cancer.
The Imperial Theatre still stands today and has been a host to many more award winners similar to Lukas and Merman. Les Misérables (1990) was preformed at the Imperial Theatre from October 1990 until May 2003 closing after 13 years featuring 5,244 performances. Les Misérables came back home to the Imperial. Sunday, 23 March 2014, was opening night. To this day the Imperial is still playing the Broadway production.
