October 15: Fort Wood National Monument
On 15 October 1924, a Presidential Proclamation declared Fort Wood and the Statue of Liberty within it, a National Monument. The Statue of Liberty is truly a symbol of autonomy, unity, and opportunity for millions of people in America.
Edouard de Laboulaye first proposed the idea of the Statue of Liberty in 1865. In about ten years, sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was authorized to design a sculpture to pay tribute and celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence. The statue was named “Liberty Enlightening the World”. It was a collaboration effort between America and France. The American people agreed to build the pedestal, and the French were responsible for the statue.
Although there was a joint effort in creating the Statue of Liberty, there was a lack of funds for both America and France. To address this issue, France’s methods of raising funds were entertainment, lottery, and public fees. The United States provided funds with auctions, art exhibitions, and benefit theatrical events. Alexandre Eiffel (designer of the Eiffel Tower), poet Emma Lazarus, and Joseph Pulitzer (newspaper editor) used their talents to support with the design and fundraising efforts. Thanks to individuals like them, the statue was complete in France in July 1884 and arrived in New York in June 1885. Up until 1901, the statue was the responsibility of the United States Lighthouse Board. After, she was under the care of the war department.
The Statute of Liberty is not only an iconic representation of America, freedom and worldwide friendship, but she has also been present in more cinemas than popcorn. Lady Liberty starred in movies as old as the 1942 Saboteur and the newer 2008 Cloverfield. So if you never get a chance to visit New York and see Lady Liberty up close, you will see her holding her torch in a hundred films to come.
