November 16: Clark Gable Dies
On 16 November 1960, Clark Gable died of a heart attack at the age of 59. A symbol of suavity, glamour, and one of the most famous actors of all time, Clark Gable was a flawed yet captivating man that is remembered long after his time.
With a sweep of his hand over his pencil thin mustache, Gable was known to make the ladies swoon. Gable is a star in the traditional sense of the word; his type of celebrity did not rely on twitter followers or what tabloid articles said about him. He was, and still is, regarded by many as the perfect leading man.
Gable had humble beginnings. After dropping out of school at the age of sixteen, he worked tirelessly in oil fields and tire factories to make ends meet. But, from the age of sixteen, he was bitten by the acting bug and knew where his destiny lay. Without an inheritance that he received at the age of twenty-one, Clark Gable may never have become the cinematic symbol we know today.
Gable had five wives, and countless children in and out of wedlock during his admired acting career.
The most remembered of Gables’ movies is, without a doubt, Gone with The Wind (1934). The story of Scarlett O’hara, played by Vivien Leigh, and Rhett Butler, portrayed by Gable, was the most expensive production in Hollywood up until that point. The film garnered not only negative reviews, but controversy in regards to gender roles in the film, as well as criticism about racial stereotypes perpetuated in the film.
Even though his premature death occurred fifty four years ago, the sight of Clark Gable can be seen domineering the screen through his many cinematic works. Gable is a shining star in Hollywood whose light will be extinguished.
