December 22: Prototype Corvette Finished
On 22 December 1952, the first prototype of the Chevrolet Corvette was finished. This changed the face of the auto industry. The Corvette brought a more modern and future look to cars.
Louis-Joseph Chevrolet, the inventor of the company, was born on Christmas day,1878, in the Bernese Jura region of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.
It all started when he built and sold his own bicycle called the Frontenac. It was said that Louis met a famous racer named William K. Vanderbilt who needed someone to fix his bicycle and was impressed when Louis exceeded in repairing it.
Vandetrbuilt invited Chevrolet to America suggesting there were great opportunities with someone of such skill. William Durant, who later worked for Chevrolet, came up with the idea of creating a sports car. The Corvette which he designed, was believed to be modeled after a jaguar. The name Corvette came from a World War II lightly armed warship used by the navy.
