May 15: Plane Crazy
On 15 May 1928, a test screening at a Los Angeles movie theater for a silent film called Plane Crazy would depict a cartoon character, that to this day, is more commonly known than are most famous celebrates.
Mickey Mouse was originally an idea of Walt Disney. Disney had asked Ub Iwerks, an animator for the Disney Studios, to design a new character to replace Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. When no luck came from any of Iwerks’s sketches, Disney showed him the concept for Mickey Mouse. Iwerks then created the final look for the mouse.
Mickey Mouse would go on to appear in over 130 Disney films that include: Steamboat Willie (1928), The Band Concert (1935), Brave Little Tailor (1938), and Fantasia (1940). Mickey Mouse has been nominated for the Academy Award for best Animated Short Film ten times but only winning the award once. He was the first cartoon character to have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame.
Today, Mickey Mouse is not only the iconic symbol for The Walt Disney Studios, but is now an icon for America itself. Selling up to $5 billion annually in merchandise, appearing in video games, comics, and t-shirts, people around the world know who the mouse is.
There has not been a Mickey Mouse movie since Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers (2004), but he’s been able to keep up appearances from his TV show on Disney Junior’s Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (2006-Present). Recently Mickey Mouse has been brought back to his golden years with a new short film Get a House! (2013), as well as new 2D shorts being aired on the Disney Channel.
The future for Mickey Mouse is all rumors and speculations. Walt Disney Studios veteran Burny Mattinson pitched the idea for a new film staring Mickey, Donald, and Goofy, though it is yet not known if Disney has approved of the project. Whatever the case might be, it is fascinating to see just how much Disney Studios has grown since 1928. And it’s all due to a mouse.
